Why she was selected: Bishop had 15 kills, one shy of the school record, in Plano’s 18-25, 32-30, 25-22 win over Sandwich. Bishop was voted by readers as Record Newspapers Athlete of the Week in an online vote. Here is his interview with sportswriter Joshua Welge.
Welge: How important and exciting was this win?
Bishop: It was an incredible victory. We hadn’t beaten Sandwich in a few years at volleyball. Beating them now was great. It was nerve-wracking, but I’m glad my whole team was able to keep their cool to get the pass to the setter where I could get those kills. Without them, I couldn’t have made 15 kills.
Welge: Have you ever had a match like this before?
Bishop: Two previous matches, I had nine kills against La Salle-Peru, which I had never even approached before. To be able to do this is incredible. It all depends on the coaches I have now and which ones I have now. They helped me get to where I am now.
Welge: How is the season going?
Bishop: It was an incredible season for the whole team. Yes, it doesn’t show in wins and losses, but the relationships we’ve built, especially compared to last season, have been a huge game-changer.
Welge: You play volleyball, basketball and football. How do you balance commitments?
Bishop: It’s a lot to balance the three sports. At the time, during the volleyball season, I devoted myself fully to volleyball. If a team has an open gym I will try to be there but at the same time I have to know my limits where I am not hurting myself and the team I am on at the moment. I make it work; and my coaches, they know that I am in the sport that I practice. They move stuff to help me.
Welge: What is your favorite class in school?
Bishop: This year, probably pottery. I like the independence of the class.
