One of Netflix’s biggest Korean series of 2020 was Sweet Home, but new production rumors from season 2 are sweeping the internet.
2020 might have been quite a tough year for the entertainment industry, but it’s been a fantastic year for fans of Korean dramas, especially on Netflix.
The platforms’ last K-drama of 2020 was the hit series Sweet Home, a horror show that was arguably one of the best (non-English or otherwise) titles of the entire year.
Season 1 ended on an exciting, if not slightly confusing, note, but with fans looking ahead, new rumors surrounding the production of Season 2 are being shared online.
Has Sweet Home been renewed by Netflix for a season 2?
As of March 2022, Sweet Home has not been publicly renewed for a second season by Netflix. However, the Korean series is almost guaranteed to get a second chapter thanks to its worldwide popularity and the open ending of Season 1.
According to What’s New on Netflix, the show was in the top 10 streaming lists for 32 different territories, ranking number one in South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia, among others. Sweet Home also scores a solid 7.4/10 on IMDB83% on rotten tomatoes and 8.7/10 on My drama list; showing how popular K-drama was around the world.
Interestingly, the director of Sweet Home already hinted at the possibility of a second season during a press conference in December 2020.
“While we were writing, we finished the end of the script ourselves, so there are a few things that came out after we finished. If the opportunity arises, we also want to introduce the monsters that we didn’t have. couldn’t. We want to stay true to the original. – Lee Eung-bok, via Restlessness.
On July 9, 2021, an article by Soompi said that “industry representatives have reported that the drama will begin filming a second season in December .”
Unfortunately, Netflix would then be address and deny this information, stating that “nothing has been decided yet regarding the production of season 2”.
However, new rumors are circulating online that production on Sweet Home has already begun, see below.
New Sweet Home Season 2 Production Rumors Circulate Online
There may not be a community like the K-drama community, which has eagle-eyed detective skills that could match any private detective.
This week, many images allegedly from the production of Sweet Home season 2 are circulating on social media.
These images would have come from the Instagram page of lead actor Song Kang’s manager.
The first image shows a bloodstained shoe with the legend “It started”, the second being the script for episode 1 and the final image supposedly coming from the set itself.
However, fans should take it with a pinch of salt as nothing has been publicly confirmed yet and there’s no way to confirm if the sets are for Sweet Home or another project.
Sweet Home season 2 potential release dateand
As previously reported, Sweet Home has yet to be publicly renewed for Season 2 and therefore a targeted release date has not been shared online. However, based on the Season 1 production cycle, HITC predicts that the hit Korean series will return to Netflix in the fall of 2022, here’s why.
Sweet Home is actually an adaptation of the incredibly popular Line Webtoon, but the Netflix series doesn’t strictly follow the original storyline.
According to a translated version of an interview on Redditthe authors did not “follow up 100% of the [the] Webtoon story” because they wanted to explore “different perspectives”.
This means that the production of a second season would have to wait until such a script and storyline can be created to match the incredibly high standards of Season 1.
As you can imagine with such complex characters and a well-crafted narrative like in Sweet Home, it will probably take several months.
Season 1 took over eight months to shoot, with production being limited in its final weeks due to the pandemic. Assuming Season 2 will see an equally hectic production schedule, the hit K-drama could hypothetically return as early as fall 2022.
This would also be in line with the aforementioned “leaked” images from the production set. If these images are to be believed and that filming has just begun, a fall 2022 premiere would align with the associated deadlines.
Expect the fantastic cast to return once again
Luckily, fans can expect the majority of cast members from Season 1 to reprise their roles for the second run, assuming the K-drama will eventually return to Netflix.
Interestingly, one of the reasons Sweet Home season 2 may have been temporarily put on hold after its 2020 debut could be because of its lead role, Song Kang.
Kang was a rising star in the K-drama industry when Sweet Home premiered, but the young actor has really taken the world by storm ever since.
Since the first season, Kang has appeared in several hugely popular series, including Love Alarm season 2, Navillera, Nevertheless, and ongoing forecast Love and Weather.
The good news is that Kang’s schedule appears to be free for Sweet Home season 2, where he is set to be joined by the following cast:
- Song Kang as Cha Hyun-soo
- Lee Jin-wook as Pyeon Sang-wook
- Lee Si-young as Seo Yi-kyung
- Go Min-si as Lee Eun-yoo
- Park Gyu-young as Yoon Ji-soo
- Come on Yoon-jung as Park Yoo-ri
- Kim Sang-ho as Han Du-sik
