For Surf employee Terry Barr, this project is personal. Barr, a longtime resident of Mendota, started Terry’s Computer Shack in 2009. He often heard friends and neighbors talk about the need for reliable internet connectivity. Over time, the need has only increased, especially in the age of working from home and e-learning.

“When I merged my company with Surf in 2017, I was convinced that my dream of helping the community of Mendota access high-speed fiber internet would come true,” Barr said in a statement from Surf. “Today’s innovation means more than just giving people the ability to ‘connect faster’. It also signifies the beginning of expanded economic development opportunities and competitiveness for Mendota. I couldn’t be prouder.

Surf CEO Gene Crusie said, “Surf has been serving customers in the Mendota area for over a decade with our wireless internet offerings. We are grateful to Terry for his vision and are excited to now bring the transformational fiber internet technology to one of our hometowns.

The entire project has been divided into 12 phases which are in the very early stages of construction, the company said. Surf hopes to have the majority of the work completed by the end of September 2022. To see if the services are currently available for a specific address, visit and click Check Availability. ■
