The Chautauqua Lake South and Central Sewer District Council awarded the west side sewer extension project to JD Northrup Construction Inc. of Ellicottville.

The award was made on the basis of the lowest responsible bid received by the Chautauqua County Finance Department.

The West Side Sewer Extension Project will provide public sewers to a portion of the sewerless properties on the west side of Chautauqua Lake along the Highway 394 corridor to Stow, to serve 450 developed properties in North Harmony.

The $ 16.9 million project will be funded through a combination of grants and a zero-interest loan from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund of the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation.

The municipal sewer extension will provide services to an area that currently uses private septic systems. The state environmental conservation department’s total maximum daily load phosphorus allowance for Lake Chautauqua in 2012, which identified private septic tanks near the lake as a source of phosphorus load. Low pressure grinding pumps will replace the septic systems and deliver the wastewater through a network of pipelines and pumping stations to the sewage treatment facility in the southern and central sewer districts of Lake Chautauqua located at Celoron.

Construction is expected to begin later this summer and last until spring 2023.
