The Turkey Valley baseball team (2-3, 2-0 UIC) scored two goals in the winning column on Tuesday, after falling twice at the New Hampton tournament on Saturday.

UIC opener
Playing at home for the first time this season, the Trojans found ways to score the points they needed to sweep Clayton Ridge / Central, 11-5, 4-3.
“It was good to get our first win under our belt and we got a good Carson Busta out of the mound in Game 1,” said coach Dan Stepan. “In the second game, the boys showed a lot of gut courage. “
TV jumped onto the board in the first and used two four-point frames to win the game on nine hits, including a Noah Hanson double. Busta and Calvin Bodensteiner combined for all seven innings on the mound, Busta struck out five. Garrett Kurtenbach had three hits in the contest, while Dylan Reicks ran around the sacks to pick up three interceptions.
In Game 2, the Trojans scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. Designated hitter Caleb Kurtenbach sent the ball over the right field fence in the second quarter to give TV a 3-1 lead. In the fifth inning, it was his older brother Garrett Kurtenbach’s turn to hit a bomb over the fence to give the Trojans a 4-1 advantage. CR / Central came back strong in sixth with two points; however, the Trojans held on for the 4-3 victory.
On the hill it was Hanson who took the win with 10 Ks. TV had six hits overall with Hanson’s two homers and two singles.

Saturday tournament
Completing the first full week of competition, the Trojans took part in the annual New Hampton tournament on Saturday. At the end of the day, TV fell to the Chickasaws 6-3 and Waterloo East 7-1.
At the start of the day against the hosts, the Trojans first threatened with a goal from Noah Hanson early in the first set. The Chickasaws responded in third to tie the game before TV’s Carson Busta added another scorecard. Then NH got to work, putting together a three-point round to take the lead and ultimately win.
Kalvin Langreck suffered defeat in his six innings on the mound. The Trojans have nine hits in competitions with Hanson, Dylan Reicks and Oliver Schmitt each representing two apiece.
“I thought the kids fought and stayed in the game until the end,” said coach Dan Stepan. “In Game 2 we had a tough round on the pitch, but I thought our kids got better as the day went on.”
The Trojans faced Waterloo East in Game 2, allowing a run in each of the second, third and fourth, before Calvin Bodensteiner crossed plate in the fourth quarter for the only TV point.
Struggling with loss, Hanson entered his three innings on the mound with two runs scored on four hits, three walks and two strikeouts. Reicks and Bodensteiner each scored doubles in the match.
